What is it?

In the past, Apple has come up with commercials featuring celebrities to show off the newest features of the iPhone. This commercial in particular stars Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster. The feature he helps show off is the new Hey Siri command where Siri responds to the user when they say, “Hey Siri.” In the commercial, Cookie Monster is baking cookies and utilizes the timer with Hey Siri, but he learns that even the iPhone can’t speed up time.


 

Why it’s good

Apple has used a few celebrities in the past, but this was the first time the beloved Cookie Monster was in one of their commercials. He was a good choice to star in the ad because he is easily recognizable and many people grew up with Cookie Monster, making him relatable to an audience of many ages. His character demonstrates the simplicity of the phone feature well, showing that it’s easy enough for just about anyone to use the iPhone 6S.

Is it successful?

The commercial on YouTube has over 11 million views in addition to 437 national airings on television. It was such a huge hit that Apple also released a behind-the-scenes video with a compilation of Cookie Monster scenes including interactions with crew members that earned over 3 million views on YouTube. It has made such an impact that several websites covered the release of the behind-the-scenes video including time.com, usmagazine.com and businessinsider.com. The video also sparked parodies made by fans.
